Sherwood Observatory Public Open Evening

Mansfield & Sutton Astronomical Society welcome you to a Public Open Evening at Sherwood Observatory.
Experience the wonders of the night sky from Sherwood observatory. Weather permitting, we hope to show you what is current in the night sky and should allow for you to observe the delights of our nearest celestial neighbour, The Moon. Expect a short talk on an astronomical themed topic in our lecture room followed by time upstairs in the main dome with our large 24-inch Newtonian reflecting telescope. You will have the opportunity to see our Radio Astronomy section, utilising the brand-new radio astronomy centre will be monitoring real time meteors that come through the Earth’s atmosphere. Also, there will be various other smaller telescopes on celestial treasures in the night sky located around the facility.
There are two 2-hour time slots from 6.00-8.00pm or 8.30-10.30pm. Adults £6, under 16’s £2.
Hot and cold refreshments including a selection of cakes will be available from our serving hatch. Astronomy themed merchandise will be available too.
Society members will be on hand to help visitors get better acquainted with what our beautiful night sky has to offer, from constellations to star clusters, planets & other hidden treasures.

Accessibility:
There is disabled access to all areas and toilets, but please note that the main telescope is housed in the dome at the top of a spiral staircase. Visitors are advised to wrap up warm.
Car parking is free and is located in the field adjacent to the Coxmoor road as soon as you enter. Please do park in a considerate manor as to allow for others to access the facility. Also, refrain from parking on residential grass verges opposite the observatory facility.
Please bring a mask and proof of booking to gain entry.
